Kickboxers Win In Boxing!

While boxers like Tyson, *Francois Botha and Butterbean (And others have been talking like Briggs & David Tua) are moving into kickboxing, we also have kickboxers moving into boxing and being very successful.

For example, IKF Pro MuayThai Super Heavyweight World Champion Matt Skelton (R) of Bedford England took home the vacant English Heavyweight title last Thursday night when he stopped former British Heavyweight champion Michael Holden in the 6th round at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham.

According to sources, "Skelton dominated the fight from start to finish." Skelton set a high pace for the first couple of rounds as he established his solid jab along with delivering some heavy looking rights. Holden continued to come forward in round three but was being out-boxed by Skelton, as the showboating proved. Rounds four and five continued in similar fashion as the undefeated Skelton switched between a southpaw and orthodox stance, showboating and generally looked comfortable. The end came in round six as Skelton backed Holden on to the ropes. A solid left-right combination out of the cluster of punches thrown connected flush on the chin of the former British champion, prompting referee Larry O'Connell's intervention with Holden hanging over the top rope. Holden drops to 10-9 with 6 KO's while new English titleholder Skelton remains unbeaten and is now 8-0 with 8 KO's.

Last Thursday night at The Plex in North Charleston, South Carolina, USA another Pro Kickboxer won as a Pro Boxing. Number 4 Ranked IKF Heavyweight Ronnie Copeland of High Point, North Carolina, USA, (Pro Kickboxing: 22-4-1/18, Pro Boxing 8-2) returned to Chucktown and used a right uppercut to the body to TKO Antonio Sloan (Winless as a pro boxer at 0-7) at 2:46 of the first round.

(*) Botha will make his K-1 Kickboxing Debut in Osaka, Japan on October 11th against Jerome LeBanner.

"The JET"
Steps Down From The Ring

Rick "The Jet'" Roufus Retires

Rick Roufus (Right after winning IKF Pro IR Title, 1999) has called an end to his career due to an injury he felt he could not recover from (Severely Torn ACL). He ends with an impressive fighting record of 61 wins, 7 loses with 41 wins by KO. He was also a professional boxer with a record of 14 wins, 3 loses and 12 wins by KO. (Won the WBC Continental American Belt, being ranked in the top 15)

At 5'11", 215 lbs. the well known Roufus was by far one of the Greatest Fighters in the Sport of Kickboxing having won multiple World Titles in various weight classes. He made his name in winning his many multiple World Titles (6 different World Titles in 6 different weight classes) as a Full Contact Rules Fighter, including his first IKF World Title, in Full Contact Rules, against Mike McDonald in 1994. Roufus became only the second IKF Mens Pro Champion (Juan Torres was the first on the same event) when he defeated Michael McDonald of Vancouver, BC, Canada, by "KO" at :43 seconds of round 1. The bout was at Caesars Tahoe Casino in Tahoe, NV, USA on January 22nd, 1994.

He won the IKF Pro International Rules Heavyweight World Champion when he defeated Stan Longinidis of Boxhill, Victoria, Australia in Lowell Massachusetts, USA on May 15th, 1999. Roufus won by TKO after Loniginidis suffered a broken bone in his foot at the end of round 9. Roufus was ahead on all 3 judges cards at the time, 89-81, 86-83 and 88-81. The bout was It was by far his best win as a leg kick fighter in his career, but it was scared with a negative that would follow him to his retirement.

At 37 years old it seems a surprise why he steps down now. But with injuries caused mainly to leg kick style fights, the Jet's career has come to an end. Later this week we will take a look back at his career and see "The Jets" plans for the future which include opening a gym in Arizona, hitting the seminar tour, a training video series and becoming a part of the IKF TV Program with 2 other former Pro Kickboxing Champions Johnny Davis and Kathy Long. In our look back we will also see what made this great fighter become the greatest of all times and be known to us all as

Few Changes In
IKF Amateur MTR North American Tournament Line-Up

But There Are Some...

As always, we will lose some fighters before a tournament begins but we were thankful we only lost 4. After the changes we still had a total of 32 Amateur MuayThai fighters ready to "Walk The Walk" at the first ever IKF Amateur MuayThai North American Tournament. The 32 will make 23 action packed bouts and by days end tomorrow we will have crowned 9 new IKF Amateur MuayThai North American Champions. Here is the complete match list for tomorrow's Championships.

Adult Men - Light Middleweights - 148.1 lbs to 160 lbs.
There were no changes here. ALL 7 fighters showed up which will make for a long day for someone. This will be a major test for these amateurs. If the number 1 seed and 2003 IKF/TKO USA National MTR Tournament Champion Marshall Blevins does not make it to the final, both our finals fighters would have had to fight 3 times in the one day event. If he does make it, only his opponent would have had to fight 3 times since his USA Nationals win gave Blevins the number 1 seed and a first round bye tomorrow morning. Here's how the division stacks up below with the daytime prelim bout schedule listed in red. The night time Finals bout order will be established after the daytime prelim session.

Adult Men - Super Middleweights - 161.1 lbs to 175 lbs.
Like the division above, there were no changes here either. Again, ALL 7 fighters showed up which will again, make for a long day for either 1 or 2 fighters. If the number 1 seed and 2003 IKF/TKO USA National MTR Tournament Champion Andy Hoffman does not make it to the final, both our finals fighters would have had to fight 3 times in the one day event. If he does make it, only his opponent would have had to fight 3 times since his USA Nationals win gave Hoffman the number 1 seed and a first round bye tomorrow morning. Here's how the division stacks up below:

Adult Men - Heavyweights - 190.1 lbs & Above
There was some shake-ups in this division. Of the scheduled and registered 6 fighters, 2 did not make the weigh-ins. As for the reasons Flavio Gomes of Farminton Hills, MI, USA, via Mexico and Alex Beck of Westmoreland City PA, USA didn't make the show, we can't tell you. What we can tell you is that the other 4 kept their commitment and did show up. In addition, Yahosuah Yahudah of Bogart, GA, USA, was moved up into the Heavyweight division making this a division of 5 fighters. Here is how the 5 stacked up for tomorrow:

Adult Men - Light Heavyweights - 176.1 lbs to 190 lbs
There was a couple of shake-ups in this division too. Of the scheduled and registered 4 fighters, Yahudah was moved up to the Heavyweight Division while Tom Hopper of Dubuque, IA, USA had to pull out due to illness. With these changes done it made this a division of just 2 fighters instead of the scheduled 4. In the night final will be:

Adult Men - Welterweights - 134.1 lbs. to 147 lbs.
Of the scheduled and registered 3 fighters in this division, Philip Petersen of Birmingham, AL, USA contacted Promoter Ryan Blackorby by phone the morning of weigh-ins, informing him that the complications with a minor surgery performed on his ear the preceding day was not going to allow him to be able to participate. This brought the division down to two. In the night final will be:

Other than one issue with one of the ladies making weight, both woman's divisions showed up 100% which meant no change in their division line-ups.

Adult Women - Lightweights - 121.1 lbs. to 134 lbs.
All here, and here's their line-up:

Adult Women - Featherweights - 108.1 lbs. - 121 lbs.

Like the Women, the Junior Boys all showed up to "Walk The Walk" too! This of course meant no change in their division line-ups.

Junior Boys - "Junior" Welterweights - 134.1 lbs. to 147 lbs.

Junior Boys - "Junior" Cruiserweights - 90.1 to 95 lbs.

As noted earlier below, after the Amateur North American Title Bouts will be an IKF Pro MuayThai bout featuring IKF Pro U.S. Champion Jeremy Harminson of Lerna, Illinois, USA, 20-2-1/15 Vs Former IKF USA Amateur Champion Chris Weitz of Dubuque, Iowa, USA, 13-2-1.

"Good Night Chesty Puller,
Wherever You Are!"

Text from various sites on the web

Those who are able to watch tonights edition of the IKF Kickboxing Show on CSS will hear Co-Host Brooks Mason (Right) say these words at the end of the show. The question many of you will ask is, "Who is Chesty Puller?" A common incantation in the tradition of the Marine Corps is to end one's day with the declaration, "Good night Chesty Puller, wherever you are!" But why?

This is an often-used tribute of supreme respect to the late and legendary Lieutenant General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller USMC. Chesty! Without a doubt was the most outspoken Marine, the most famous Marine, the Marine who really loved to fight, the most decorated Marine in the history of the Corps. He enlisted as a Private. Through incredible fortitude and tenacity he became a living legend. He shouted battle orders in a bellow and stalked battlefields as though impervious to enemy fire as he rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. He displayed an abiding love for the Magnificent Grunts, especially the junior enlisted men who did the majority of the sacrificing and dying, and utter contempt for all staff pogues of whatever rank. During his four wars, he was the only Marine to win the Navy Cross five times for heroism and gallantry in combat. The Marines' Marine!

He was a colorful veteran of the Korean War, four World War II campaigns, and expeditionary service in China, Nicaragua, and Haiti. A Marine officer and enlisted man for 37 years, General Puller served at sea or overseas for all but ten of those years, including a hitch as commander of the "Horse Marines" in China. Excluding medals from foreign governments, he won a total of 14 personal decorations in combat, plus a long list of campaign medals, unit citation ribbons and other awards. In addition to the Navy Crosses, the highest honor the Navy can bestow, he holds its Army equivalent, the Distinguished Service Cross.

No individual soldier in American history has embodied his service's ethos as has the Marine Corps' Chesty Puller. Puller went far beyond; he personally crafted the way the Marine Corps has defined itself since World War II by dint of his own personal example. The Marine tradition of having the officers eat last in common field messes in descending order of rank is a "Pullerism" as is the habit of encouraging officers to lead from the front. Puller was not the only senior Marine of World War II and Korea to put his command post on the front lines, but his stubborn habit of always doing so was unusual even among Marine leaders.

Chesty Puller's real value to the Marine Corps lies not in his unsurpassed record in combat. Rather it resides in the legacy of leadership by example that he set every day of his military life. His uncompromising approach to tough, realistic training and his dedication to taking care of his Marines without coddling them made him a beloved figure among the enlisted personnel of the Corps. That tradition still defines the Marine Corps approach to leadership. To this day, many Marine Corps drill instructors have their troops wish Chesty good night wherever he may be. His 14 personal decorations, excluding those from foreign governments, certainly are part of Puller's enduring lore, but perhaps the stories of his leadership, courage, honor, and fighting ability are his most important legacy. They serve as reminders and inspiration to generations of Marines that leading by example is the most important trait we can possess. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller died in Hampton, Virginia, after a long illness at the age of 73.

Our good friend Brooks was a Marine but there is no "WAS" about it. As the saying goes, "Once a Marine always a Marine." He remembers Puller's accomplishments well. I know Brooks lives up to the leadership of Chesty and I would hope the rest of us in the IKF do the same in our everyday lives knowing that leading by example is the most important trait we can possess...

LOTS Of IKF Action This Weekend...

Blackorby Ready For IKF Amateur
MuayThai North American Championships

IKF Championships: This Saturday, September 27, 2003, IKF Promoter Ryan Blackorby will launch the inaugural IKF North American Amateur MuayThai Championships at the Riverplex in Peoria, Illinois, USA. The event will feature Amateur MuayThai Rules Fighters only fighting under IKF modified Muay Thai rules: (no elbows and knees to the head).

Although the event was open to fighters from USA, Canada and Mexico, the only fighters on the roster are from USA. Be it travel expenses, other commitments or whatever, these USA Fighters will be fighting others on Team USA for the title. So does this make it a rerun of the 2003 IKF/TKO USA Nationals as someone suggested on the Kickboxing Message Board? Not at all.

This was an open tournament and anyone could have "Walked the Walk" here. However it appears only 35 fighters will be doing so. ALL 35 from the USA. "You can't blame these fighters if no one from Canada or Mexico wants to make the trip." says IKF President Steve Fossum. "Anyone could have entered and 35 did, 35 willing to fight to be crowned IKF North American Champion."

To the winners will go Red, IKF Amateur MTR North American Title Belts (Shown at Right, the Green, 2002 IKF Amateur FCR North American Title Belt is shown below at Left.) valued at $240.00. Also to the winners will be a blessed and framed mong kong, the traditional ceremonial head piece for all Muay Thai fighters in Thailand donated by Fairtex Fight Gear. Second place winners will receive Silver Gloves. The night time finals bouts will be filmed for the IKF Kickboxing TV Program and shown on various programs over the next few months.

Of the 3 different divisions organized (Men, Woman & Juniors) there will be 9 North American Titles awarded. Of them, 5 will be in the Adult Men's division, 2 in the Adult Woman's division and 2 in the Junior Boys division. There will be 17, 3 round prelim bouts fought during the day Saturday with 9, *3 round IKF Amateur MTR North American Title Bouts fought for in the night time Championship Event.

(*) Usually an IKF Amateur North American Title Bout is 5 rounds. However, due to this being a Tournament Style Event where we thought "Everyone" would be fighting at least 2 if not 3 times during the day, the Title bouts were scheduled for 3 rounds. HOWEVER, on Friday at registrations, fighters and their trainers will be allowed to vote by blind ballot (no one will know the actual persons name who voted) if or not they want to fight a 5 round title bout as compared to a 3. This would be mainly suggested for those who do not have Saturday prelim bouts. At last years 2002 IKF Full Contact Rules North American Tournament all the Championship Bouts were 5 rounds. However, there was only 1 prelim bout during the day. At this years 2003 IKF Full Contact Rules North American Tournament the Championship Bouts will once again be 5 rounds.

Here is how the action is scheduled as of press time today and provided all the fighters show-up at the event.

Adult Men - Light Middleweights - 148.1 lbs to 160 lbs.

Adult Men - Super Middleweights - 161.1 lbs to 175 lbs.

Adult Men - Heavyweights - 190.1 lbs & Above

Adult Men - Light Heavyweights - 176.1 lbs to 190 lbs

Adult Men - Welterweights - 134.1 lbs. to 147 lbs.

Adult Women - Lightweights - 121.1 lbs. to 134 lbs.

Adult Women - Featherweights - 108.1 lbs. - 121 lbs.

Junior Boys - "Junior" Welterweights - 134.1 lbs. to 147 lbs.

Junior Boys - "Junior" Cruiserweights - 90.1 to 95 lbs.

After the Amateur North American Title Bouts was suppose to be 2 IKF Pro MuayThai Bouts. The first will feature IKF Pro U.S. Champion Jeremy Harminson of Lerna, Illinois, USA, 20-2-1/15 Vs Former IKF USA Amateur Champion Chris Weitz of Dubuque, Iowa, USA, 13-2-1.

The other was suppose to be the nights main event which would have had Raul Llopis of Ft. Wayne Indiana USA, 26-3/18 face off against Alex Arnel of Springfield Missouri, USA, 19-8/6 for the vacant IKF Pro U.S. Lightweight Title Bout. However, earlier today Arnel called Promoter Ryan Blackorby and informed him he was injured and has pulled himself from the bout. If a replacement cannot be found by fight time for Llopis the Harminson Vs Weitz bout will become the nights main event.

Here is the weekends event info and Itinerary below:

Finney's Ready To
ROCK The Midwest AGAIN!

IKF St Louis, Missouri, USA: The Midwest has a couple of things that set it apart from the rest of the U.S. The first is the amount of kickboxing events that are promoted in a 5 state area, the next is the changes in seasons that you see 4 times a year. The first day of Autumn is on September 23rd, with this season change comes a number of different things. The first is the changing of the leaves, this is what most people associate with when they hear about the "Fall" season. The temperature starts to cool off during the day, and especially during the night. This brings us back to the kickboxing scene in the Midwest. Now that the nights are getting colder, the fights have to warm up the nights. So to warm this Saturday night up, Finney's Championship Kickboxing and Martial Arts has put together an amazing night of fights.

After coming off another great performance at Nationals, winning 5 belts with 8 fighters, Finney's has some fighters that will be taking this night off. There will be two fighters making their way back into the ring. 2001 IKF National ChampionJen Repa will be back in the ring after almost a year off for school. Her opponent will be Annie Galligan out of Detroit, Michigan. Galligan is a past Michigan state toughwoman champion.

The second fighter will be IKF Missouri State Champion Mark "KY" Winfield. Winfield is also back in the ring after taking a year off. His opponent is Dwight Davis out of Ontario, Canada. Finney's has scene Davis fight before. He fought Mark Mayfield on one of their past cards. Some of the other faces from the Finney's national team will be seeing action. Kevin "The Hitman" Engel will be sharpening his boxing skills. He will be fighting a boxing fight against Joe Johnson. Johnson fights out of North County Boxing, and has been in Golden Gloves for about 7 years. "Mean" Mike Green will be back in the ring, this time in a NHB match. Green's opponent will be Nick Zona, also from St. Louis, Missouri. After making a transition to IR Rules for the nationals, Dylan Leonard will be back in the ring for another International Rules fight. His opponent will be John Hoppes out of Waterloo, Iowa. Rounding out the card:

Marinoble Boys Overcome
Cancelled Main Event At "FIGHT NIGHT!"

IKF Staff Reporter Mike Marinoble

Roseville, California, USA: Saturday night was hot in Roseville California. The Summer sun had granted a reprieve to sweltered valley dwellers during the previous week, but this day it was hot. It was the 20th of September and the day wore on sweaty and arid in this trafficked community 25 miles North of Sacramento. Noon came and went and soon darkness fell upon the city. Night never looms here, it just comes. Sometimes the freaks come out. Sometimes things happen. And sometimes...every three months or so….The Marinoble Brothers throw a good ol' fashioned smoker!

Fighters from as far away as San Luis Obispo and Las Vegas Nevada converged upon this 7,000 square foot facility to bang with the best and face-down the brightest upcoming stars of amateur kickboxing. Marinobles Karate & Kickboxing is owned by IKF Pro Middleweight World Champion Dave "Mad Man" Marinoble who frequently hosts some of the most exciting and well produced kickboxing "Smoker Style" shows in the West. This night would see fifteen amateur bouts and mid-way through this show the surrounding communities swarmed to gather as spectators. Marinoble's suddenly became the place to be this Saturday night...Even the freaks came out to witness the action.

The nights show-downs are as follows:

  1. Noel Rodriquez loses to Vince Wolf by decision.

  2. Marcus Crandall in an incredible display of natural talent shows his stuff in an exhibition fight with a skilled and note-worthy Jeff Kastorff. These fighters are team-mates and filled in a last minute void left when Adam Rogers and his fighters pulled out of the show only a few hours before the doors opened.

  3. Alex Ramos loses by decision to Luke Riddering.

  4. Larry Kloak wins by decision over Eddie Sam.

  5. Brandon Lund wins a split decision over Randy Hickman.

  6. Christina Torres, the only fighter from Adam Roger's school in Seaside, California to appear at the production, filled a vacancy and agreed to fight an exhibition bout with Ringside Gym's Molly Pelton.

  7. Christopher Gonzales wins by decision over Anthony Gonzales.

  8. Andy Cobb loses by TKO to Clinton Quinzell.

  9. Megan Elledge wins by decision over Gabby Morales.

  10. Sam Spangler wins by decision over Charles Lin.

  11. Chris Poole wins by K.O. over Kelly Dunstin.

  12. Juan Carlos Vega loses a close decision to Dustin Todd.

  13. Mike Knapp wins by a close decision in an all out slug-fest over Alan Scoville.

  14. Ahmad Hempsted loses by decision to Scott Lighty.

  15. Derrick Burnsed wins by decision over a vocal but tough Chan Pen who filled in for an absent Adam Rogers to complete the nights action.

The success of the show was nearly derailed when Adam Rogers, who was scheduled to fight Burnsed in a much anticipated main event, called the show's producers an hour after weigh-ins to explain that he wouldn't be attending the event. Neither Rogers nor his two fighters showed up, forcing the Marinoble's to scramble for last minute substitutions. Gene and Conchita Fields, owners of Fields Academy of Kickboxing in Modesto and coaches to K-1 Champion Carter Williams, were instrumental in the success of Marinoble's event. Their students and fighters made themselves available as substitute opponents without regard to levels of experience, rules styles or status of any would be contenders. "True heart" and "Warriors" are words that come to mind when speaking of Team VooDoo.

Dave Marinoble is senior instructor to a staff of 17 instructors who are trained and experienced in the production of events such as these. Marinoble's Martial Art and Kickboxing Center is home to IKF West Coast Heavyweight Champion Mike Marinoble, IKF Middleweight National Champion Derrick Burnsed and four time IKF Lightweight Champion Robert Elledge. Marinoble's is located in Roseville, California, a suburb of Sacramento.

IKF Pro World Champion Dave Marinoble (Right) has been adding a little more to his schedule over the last year. SEPTEMBER SLAM, SLAMS!!!
By IKF Utah Representative, Kwame Stephens

IKF Salt Lake City, Utah, USA: It was a great show put on by the MuayThai Institute of Kunponli where the crowd was treated to upcoming amateur talent in the Muay Thai division. Trainer/ promoters Sakasem Kanthawong and Mr. Craig Lamanna had the crowd entertained with some good matchmaking. All participating gyms came to fight and really showcased their young talents. Participating gyms were Master Toddy Muay Thai of Las Vegas, NV, SideKicks Kickboxing of Nampa, Idaho and Walt Bayless Jiu-Jitsu.

The Main Event was for the vacant IKF Amateur MTR Light Heavyweight North Mountain Regional Title. Mickee Porritt of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (9-1 8ko, 177, 6'1, 30, Griffin Reynauld, 801-942-6903) and Spenser Buhler of Nampa, Idaho, USA (3-1 3ko, 175, 6'0, Chris Reyna, 208-463-9999) fought toe to toe for all 4 rounds. These two contenders definitely deserved a shot at the title and they did not disappoint the crowd. They did exactly what they were supposed to do in a fight, LEAVE IT ALL IN THE RING !!! Too bad someone had to lose this fight.

Porritt started early to get ahead on the score cards with punches and knees but like a true warrior Buhler came back at the end with punches and knees of his own. Good fight guys !!! In the end, Mickee Porritt took the title with a unanimous decision win over Spenser Buhler.

Here are the results of the undercard fights for the night.

  1. BOUT 1: IKF Amateur MuayThai
Bianca Solis of Nampa, Idaho, USA (4-0, 95, 4'11", 12, Chris Reyna, 208-463-9999) defeated Jimary Marquez of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (0-2, 100, 4'11 12, Sakasem, 801-474-3136) by unanimous decision. This was a rematch and it was a FIGHT!!!!! Mark my words, Ms. Solis will be a world champion. Though only 12, this young lady's skill is beautiful to watch.

  2. BOUT 2: IKF Amateur MuayThai
Polly Harris of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (1-0, 127, 5'6 , Sakasem, 801-474-3136) defeated Debra Webb of Las Vegas, NV, USA (0-1 ,132, 5'6, Master Toddy, (702) 433-7000) by unanimous decision.

  3. BOUT 3: IKF Amateur MuayThai
Roy Ayala of Nampa, Idaho, USA (2-1, 176, 5'10", Chris Reyna, 208-463-9999) defeated Alex Crain of Las Vegas, NV, USA (0-1 ,181, 5'9, Master Toddy, (702) 433-7000) by 2nd rd TKO, doctor stoppage.

  4. BOUT 4: IKF Amateur MuayThai
Jose Garcia of Las Vegas, NV, USA (1-0 ,160, 5'7, Master Toddy, (702) 433-7000) defeated Reshat Delija of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (0-1, 156, 5'7, Sakasem, 801-474-3136) by Split decision.

  5. BOUT 5: IKF Amateur MuayThai
Robby Wyatt of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (2-0, 155, 5'6, 23, Sakasem, 801-474-3136) defeated Ludo Castronovo of Las Vegas, NV, USA (0-2 ,160, 5'10, Master Toddy, (702) 433-7000) by unanimous decision. This was a great fight with constant action. Castronovo's constant aggression coming forward was matched well with Wyatt's side to side movement and pin-point strikes. These young men will be something to look forward too in the future.

  6. BOUT 6: IKF Amateur MuayThai
Matt May of Nampa, Idaho, USA (2-1, 150, 5'10, 17, Chris Reyna, 208-463-9999) defeated Kevin Ross of Las Vegas, NV, USA (0-1 ,148, 5'8, Master Toddy, (702) 433-7000) by 3rd TKO. Even though Matt May prefers to fight Kickboxing rules he showed no problems adjusting to Muay Thai and actually won the fight with knees. Beautiful display of Muay Thai skill.

  7. BOUT 7: IKF Amateur MuayThai
Steve Didier of Las Vegas, NV, USA (2-0 ,212, 5'11, Master Toddy, (702) 433-7000) defeated Joe Cunliff of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (0-1, 220, 6'4, 28, Sakasem, 801-474-3136) by unanimous decision.

Great collective effort by all at the MuayThai Institute of Kunponli to pull off another good show for the enthusiastic crowd of Muay Thai fans. For more info contact Mr. Craig Lamanna at (801) 474-3136 or by e-mail at admin@thaiboxutah.com or go to their website by CLICKING HERE.

However, while doing so, thanks to the new changes (Updates to webmail program done in the last 2 days at Earthlink) in Earthlinks new webmail program, "ALL" E-mail that was located in our "In-Box" that was sent here to the IKF between Saturday afternoon, September 6th, 2003 and today, Wednesday morning at 7:30 AM was somehow dumped and lost by Earthlinks from our mail server. CSS To Re-Air
IKF Kickboxing Show #1 This Saturday!

Show #2 Still On Schedule For This Friday At 11:PM!

As several have heard or read, CSS started our first IKF Kickboxing TV program approximately 10 minutes late last week due to a Live Football Game running late. According to CSS the nights master controller (MC) was faced with a decision between the live game and the start time of our program. Usually, when a game runs later, CSS joins the following program in progress. The show is usually produced by CSS so it is not a big deal so when the game went long on Friday, the operator at CSS master control followed regular policy and simply joined our IKF Kickboxing TV program in progress.

He was faced with starting the show in the middle or starting the beginning and cutting something out. Since it was our first show, he opted to keep the opening and cut a segment out, which was our pro segment with an interview and clips of 3 Pro IKF Bouts. On Monday the MC was informed that our show is produced by us here at IKF and was noted to always start our program on time. CSS has assured us that this will not be happening again.

Due to the missing footage the show that aired last Friday as our show Number 1 will re-air this Saturday night at 9:PM Eastern Time. The missing footage on Show Number 1 Was:

Our Second Program scheduled for this Friday night (September 12th) at 11:PM on CSS will air on time as usual. Here is an update of what show 2 (Friday at 11:PM) will feature:

Within the next few weeks we look to have former multi time Pro Woman's Kickboxing Champion Kathy Long (Right) join the program. Our plans for Kathy are many but look to see her starting out with a special segment entitled "Where Are They Now?" Which is a look back at former stars of the sport. Some stars we look to have Kathy sit down with are Don Wilson & Maurice Smith (Who are both still active fighters) Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, Peter Cunningham, Paul Biafore, Maurice Smith and many more. Kathy will also be a part of fight commentating and our sit down desk segments in the future too

For the first several programs we did not seek show sponsorship. We want everyone to see how different our program will be as compared to other kickboxing programming of the past. This means all ad spots will be sold and inserted by CSS. After the first few programs, look to see who the sponsors of IKF Kickboxing are and make sure you support them since they are supporting our sport!

"EIGHT" Records Broken
& Two Tied

At This Years 2003 IKF/TKO
USA National Amateur Tournament

Probably one of the most interesting pages to look at is the USA Nationals Stats and Facts page. On this page anyone can find all the numbers for the past IKF USA National Amateur Tournaments. Number registered, number of bouts, number of champions, wins by TKO/KO etc. etc.

At this years 2003 IKF/TKO USA National Amateur Championship Tournament there were NINE records broken. Here they are below;

  1. Number of Fighters Who Actually "FOUGHT" On Event: This was a tie from last year with 200. However this record should have been broken this year because we lost 5 fighters due to that massive power outage in the northeast which closed the airports of Thursday and Friday before the event. Two fighters could not make weight at the Friday weigh-ins and 1 fighter pulled out at registrations due to an injury.
  2. Number of Bouts Fought: Old record from 2001: 141. New record: 146.
  3. Number of Junior Boy Competitors: Old record from 2002: 55. New Record: 58.
  4. Number of Junior Girls Competitors: There was a tie with the old record of 18 in 2001 and 2002. New Record: 26.
  5. Number of Junior Boys Bouts: This was a tie with last year: 37.
  6. Number of Junior Girls Bouts: There was a tie with the old record of 11 in 2001 and 2002. New Record: 16.
  7. Number of Junior Boys International Rules (IR) Fighters: Old record from 2002: 8. New Record: 13.
  8. Number of Junior Girls International Rules (IR) Fighters: Old record from 2001: 8. New Record: 10.
  9. Number of Junior Girls Title Bouts: There was a tie with the old record of 7 in 2001 and 2002. New Record: 8.
  10. Number of Adult Men's International Rules (IR) Fighters: Old record from 2002: 24. New Record: 36.

To see all the "Stats and Facts" of all of the past IKF USA National Amateur Championship Tournaments CLICK HERE. There was a Three way tie for the Teams with the most wins. Those Teams were;

2003 Hess (Mikido Team) From Alexandria, Virginia, USA. Tied with Most Fighters (10) and Most Titles (5) And Won Most Team wins (11). The Mikido team has won 17 IKF titles over the years at the IKF USA National Tournament. Brent Hess is the only fighter to have won titles in all three rule styles ( FCR, IR and MuyThai).

Navarro's IKF Point Kickboxing
Grand Championship Winners Announced!

By Johnny Davis

This past weekend Professor Carlos and Rubi Navarro hosted another excellent martial arts tournament. The tournament was held at the Terra Nova High School in Pacifica, Ca. Approx. 300 competitors from across California and abroad competed in forms, weapons, point karate sparring and IKF Point Muay Thai and IKF Point Kickboxing divisions. The IKF Point Kickboxing divisions had several matches that were very competitive and with lots of action! It seems that some competitors are starting to build a following and, or at least bringing large groups to cheer them on! Its exciting to watch the fans get into some of the matches as their enthusiasm shows in their screams, yells and stomping bleachers! The Next event is October 4th in Roseville, CA. For more information on IKF Point Kickboxing contact PKB Director Johnny Davis at (916) 780-7483 or johnnyd@netwiz.net.

Politics Once Again Have
Negative Effect Upon US San Shou Community

David Ross - New York San Shou

Special To The IKF: Is USA WKF beyond rehabilitation? While no one in Anthony Goh's USA WKF wants this to become news, the US San Shou community discovered recently that Goh and Shawn Liu have had a falling out and Shawn Liu is NO LONGER US NATIONAL TEAM COACH. Recently, Goh and Liu conspired behind closed doors to place the USA WKF national team trails at Liu's event despite the universal opposition by the San Shou community. However, apparently alliances are short lived in such a corrupt environment.

Shawn Liu's departure was immediately followed by more underhanded actions on the part of Anthony Goh and his "ghost" USA WKF. We call it "ghost" because we have no idea how decisions are being made, or even if more than one person is making them. The national team was also selected behind closed doors by a "committee" whose composition has not been disclosed. This so called "committee" selected a member who would not have qualified under the written criteria the USA WKF posted on its own web page!

Anthony Goh proceeded to select a new national team coach without even notifying the US San Shou community of Liu's departure. Goh selected a person who is completely unknown to the US community and who doesn't even have a San Shou program here in the US. In fact, we aren't even sure that this person SPEAKS ENGLISH! They also scheduled the "training camp" without speaking with the national team members. It seems as if Anthony Goh can't help but confirm with every action that he is nothing but a petty dictator who has no regard for due process.

Several US based coaches have tried to contact Anthony Goh regarding this situation and have received NO RESPONSE. The silence is deafening.

It's All About
Exposure For Us ALL!

La Tasha Marzolla

As many of you know by now, the IKF Kickboxing TV program will make it's debut this Friday night to the South Eastern portion of the United States. The show will feature both amateur as well as pro kickboxing along with up close interviews of fighters, promoters and trainers of the sport. To sum it up, it's all about the EXPOSURE! The more people that see a fighters face, and how exciting our sport is, the better for everyone! More exposure means more stars, more stars means larger crowds and larger crowds means growth of the sport. This is our ultimate goal!

The IKF and K-1 have something in common when it comes to exposure. While IKF is breaking into the TV World, K-1 is already there. But this is not where the two have common ties. Those common ties can be related to the building of stars which is something the IKF has been doing on a weekly basis right here on the IKF website. As for K-1, they have been building stars for years too but have now found a new niche to bring their events more EXPOSURE! The most publicized example of this with K-1 would be the recent acquiring of massive IKF Football star Bob Sapp. This was followed by the boxer, Butterbean, who never kicked but showed his skills as a boxer were enough to win in K-1 by KO! The most recent news of Mike Tyson (Left & Right) signing on with K-1 for a potential bout in Japan though seems to have topped them all!

Today K-1 added another means of exposure when they booked K-1 Fighting Playboy Model, La Tasha Marzolla (Below Left) on the Howard Stern and The Orlando Jones Show in New York, NY. (E! Channel's "The Howard Stern Show" on Wednesday, September 3rd and F/X Network's "The Orlando Jones Show" on Tuesday, September 9th.) No, Sapp, Tyson and Marzolla are not kickboxers, or should we say, they didn't start out as one. However, their entree into the sport has brought exposure to the sport by even those in the Boxing game. Sapp and Marzolla have learned the game and plan to continue to fight in it. Sapp has even showed some success in it which is mainly due to his MASSIVE size and not his kickboxing skill. As for Tyson, we will wait and see if he actually steps into the ring to fight as a kickboxer first and if he does, many wonder if he will he even attempt a kick. But has Sapp? Sapp proved you don't have to kick to win in K-1, just throw a powerful hammerfist. Nearly every boxing publication in the world has released the news of Tyson and his association with K-1. This is exposure kickboxing has NEVER received before, "ESPECIALLY" from those in the game of boxing.

When Sapp came into K-1 everyone said "He was a monster!" When Marzolla came into K-1 in Las Vegas all people had to say was "She's no fighter, she's a playboy bunny!" And when Tyson came in, we all heard about how he is going to destroy every kickboxer in his path. The worry here is what boxing can gain from all this... Yes Boxing.

We can see the headlines now if Sapp and Tyson ever do hook it up in the ring. If the future plays out as many believe it to, we may hear the boxing world bragging with headlines like "Kickboxing's BEST Vs Boxing's Throw Away and BOXING WINS, Proving that Boxing IS Superior!" Well, this will be how the media will play it up which as we all know is FAR from any truth! It will be yet another opportunity for boxing to downplay the "TRUE" Skills of kickboxing against someone who is far from our "BEST" to offer. Beware kickboxing fans, we need to be ready for this and be ready for our responses to those in the media. Did a boxer that the sport of boxing seems not to want want really beat the BEST kickboxer that our sport of kickboxing had to offer? Of course not, and we need to be sure not to let boxing grab any glory from this whole match-up if it does happen and if Tyson does beat whoever they put in front of him.

So was K-1 wrong to bring in Sapp, (Right) Tyson, Butterbean and Marzolla? Well, for the morals and ethics of our sport, maybe this can be questioned since so many other TRUE Kickboxers are more deserving of this great exposure these individuals are getting. So many others before them have put in the long hard hours of "Kickboxing" training to become STARS of our sport but never saw a camera.

However from the media viewpoint the acquisition of Sapp, Tyson, Butterbean and Marzolla was probably one of the greatest moves ever served up by any promotional group! They may not be kickboxers, but than again, neither was Jean-Claude VanDamm and look what kind of EXPOSURE he brought to our sport with his movies. Like in politics, good news, bad news it doesn't matter. As long as they are talking about you and they spell your name right, it's EXPOSURE! Give Scott Coker, Mike Sawyer and their K-1 associates big points for bringing EXPOSURE to our sport whether it be by way of K-1, Sapp, Tyson, Butterbean, Marzolla or Mr. Bugs Bunny himself! As long as our sport is in the news, it's GREAT! " The more press our sport gets the better for ALL OF US!

Lets not let it stop here. While we work on our IKF Kickboxing TV program and K-1 works with bringing Sapp, Tyson, Butterbean, Marzolla and whoever else they plan to surprise us with to our TV screens, don't be afraid to step up to the plate yourself. Promoters, what are you doing to bring more people to your events? Do you have a Sapp, Tyson, Butterbean or Marzolla in your area? If so, make a few phone calls, make them a special guest at your events. Have a grudge match with oversized boxing gloves between the town mayor and the police chief. Get something going, get people talking, get yourself and our sport some EXPOSURE! But don't forget the fighters too! Get them out there in the publics eye, make special appearances, type out those press releases, GET PEOPLE TALKING! The more press our sport gets, the better for everyone and with it will follow those sponsors to support what we are ALL doing! Promoting the sport of KICKBOXING! "Bring It ON!"

This past Sunday night, August 31st, IKF Promoter Lee Whittington hosted some great MuayThai action at the Marlowe Rooms Sidcup in Kent England. This was a Great Night of Amateur Thai Boxing, with a full capacity crowd for Whittington's first promotion. People were being turned away at the door. It's In The Mail!

The "TALK" is over everyone and now it's time for the IKF to "Walk The Walk" yet again! At around 6:PM tonight the first IKF Kickboxing TV program was sent off via Express Mail to the CSS (Comcast Sports Southeast) Office in Atlanta Georgia, USA. The first show will air this coming Friday night at 11:PM on CSS in 9 South East states to nearly 4 million households and over 14 million potential viewers awaiting to once again see exciting kickboxing action on a weekly basis. Each week we will be sending a new show for the next 17 weeks. When the 17 weeks are up, look for us to move to an earlier timeslot because for the fall, college football rules the airwaves in the southeast! This first program will feature the following segments hosted by IKF President Steve Fossum and IKF World Ambassador Brooks Mason:

  • Final Round: A quick recap of the program

Since no one has a clue what our program will look like, we did not seek show sponsorship for the first two programs. We want everyone to see how different our program will be as compared to other kickboxing programming of the past. This means all ad spots will be sold and inserted by CSS. After the first two pilot programs, look to see who the sponsors of IKF Kickboxing are and make sure you support them since they are supporting our sport!

We hope those able to view it in the southeast (Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina & North Carolina) will like the show. Keep in mind, we expect to hear some things you want improved, changed etc. on the first few shows and we promise we will listen. Just let us know your thoughts and where you want the show to improve. To do so, send us an e-mail at main@ikfkickboxing.com. However, we still expect to see many of your comments on the message board...For more stories on the show scroll down the page or go to the IKF/CSS TV page by clicking HERE!
