Today's Quote...
"What do you first do when you learn to swim?
You make mistakes, do you not? And what happens? You make other mistakes, and when you have made all the mistakes you possibly can without drowning - and some of them many times over - what do you find? That you can swim? Well - life is just the same as learning to swim! Do not be afraid of making mistakes, for there is no other way of learning how to live!"

Canada's
Adam Weber
Captures IKF Amateur Muay Thai
WORLD TITLE

While Canada's Greg Lamothe & Tim Packer Also Capture IKF Canadian Gold

By Christopher Kelsall - Victoria Sports News

The No Guts, No Glory boxing and kickboxing fight card that took place Friday night at Pearkes Arena proved true to its name as 14 combatants fought seven exciting fights. Three of the bouts proved to be thrillers.

The evening was capped with the IKF Amateur World title. Campbell River's Chase Ingalls, who entered the ring with a 22-1 record and four world titles to his credit, fought Burlington, Ontario's Adam Weber. They competed in the 165 pound weight class. Weber is listed with a record of 17-1, however, he is undefeated in boxing, kickboxing and MMA.

Ingalls was fighting below his optimum weight and it showed. Although at least as equally skilled as Weber, the difference was in his lack of cardiovascular fitness, he was fading late in each of the rounds.

After five, hard-fought rounds, the judges unanimously decided that Weber had the edge in the fight as he won the IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Super Middleweight World title.

Ingalls said, "I think I did fight below my best weight. I am not going to hang my head about this one. I hadn't fought in one and a half years and it was good to get back in the ring. It's the sport I love. I am not going to walk away from it. I will get back to work and train for my fight Coming up this summer in La Paz, Mexico."

Although Weber did not control the fight, he managed to slip many of Ingalls' punches. Asked about anticipating both the jab and the counter punch, he said, "I did notice that as he became tired later in the rounds it was more obvious where the punches were coming from and he was beginning to drop his hands, which I tried to take advantage of."

One of the most exciting fights of the night included Victoria's Greg Lamothe, who took on Peter Dvorak for the IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Canadian Welterweight title. Dvorak entered the ring with 51 fights to Lamothe's 14. Lamothe could have turned down the bout with the more experienced fighter but he accepted the fight despite learning of Dvorak's record late.

Lamothe looked from the outset as the superior fighter. He was throwing hard right hands at will and hitting Dvorak with punishing round kicks to the body and some kicks up high. It appeared that it was Lamothe was the one who had 51 fights.

Twice he sat Dvorak on the canvas and it was during the middle of the second round that the ref stopped the fight. Lamothe earned his IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Canadian Welterweight title with a technical knockout.

Asked about his confidence Lamothe said, "The fight before this one was tough as my opponent had more fights than me and I had that in my head throughout. This time, it was about being confident in myself. I was, and the plan worked out well."

Stan Peterec, who was the co-promoter of the fight card and coach of a few of the athletes said, "Greg did everything he needed to do correctly. Everything he did, he did as planned. As for Dvorak with those 51 fights, I don't know if he did. I am not to taking anything away from Greg as he was clearly the better fighter."

The first IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Canadian title of the night was won by Victoria's Tim "Packman" Packer who took on Shawn Baulie of Burlington. The first round featured the two athletes hitting hard, Packer, earned a standing 8 count early as he was tagged on the chin. Certain that he was perfectly okay to continue, he considered the punch as a wake-up call and turned up the heat on his opponent.

During each of the next four rounds, Packer became more and more ferocious as he went after Baulie strait-on and continually landed punches, before being tied up. By the fourth round, Baulie wanted no part of Packer's plan and was hanging on.

Packer earned his second Canadian title, the IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Canadian title in that fight and he earned his second Dylan Brown trophy for showing the most heart.

The trophy has emotional ties for Packer as he was good friends with Brown, a former kickboxer, who passed away two years ago.

"I will fight anyone, anytime to win that trophy. To win it two out of the three times that it has been awarded means a lot to me as it is named after my good friend, who I lost two years ago, Dylan Brown," shared Packer.

Carlos "Sonic" Chua of Burnaby took on Kieren Mueller of Victoria, who was fighting out of Martial Arts Unlimited. Chua won with a TKO at the end of the second round. Both fighters showed good skill, however, Chua knocked down Mueller twice, early. The first time with a right hand to the chin, the second time with a kick to the chin – a right round kick that sat Mueller and gave the 5', 120-pound Chua the victory.

"I haven't fought for a few years, but I knew this guy as I had fought him before and my coach had also fought him, so we knew what to do and we planned for it," said Chua. Peterec added, "He is an exciting guy to watch. Chua always puts on a good show."

The third fight of the evening saw two first-time kickboxers clash in the 135-pound super lightweight division. Port Alberni's Matt Goodwin of Peterec's kickboxing won with a unanimous decision over Jordan Kinaird.

It was an exciting bout, where the two exchanged flurries of combinations. They appeared more experienced than their record showed.

The second fight of the evening was an exhibition boxing match with two, two-minute rounds. Scott Judson took on Theo Konyekakis. No decision is rendered in exhibition fights.

Opening the fight card was Anita Baker from Campbell River, in her first ever fight, taking on Victoria's Meghan "The Megatron" Stewart. She has one boxing match to her credit and this was her first time kickboxing. They competed in the 185-pound category.

The fight was fairly even; however, Stewart had the edge throughout and countered repeatedly with effective right hands and round kicks. She earned the unanimous decision.

There were two women's fights, the second saw Kaitlynn Routidge of Nanaimo take on Kaitlyn Jorgenson of Campbell River, both in their first fight. Routidge won with a unanimous decision. The fight was close throughout; however, Routidge appeared to telegraph her punches, especially the right, which was detected by Jorgenson, who countered with good combinations.

Asked about the fight card and whether it was good for Victoria fighters or the sport, Peterec said, "I think it was good for kickboxing. There were some good fights. The first-timers did what they could and put out a good effort and the later fights were very exciting, especially Lamothe's and Packer's."

13 Rounds is a non-profit organization that provides for disabled people to learn adaptive boxing skills so they can improve their quality of life. The event was held at the beautiful Rainwater Conference Center in the Azalea City. Local sponsors had lined up to help with such support that each bout winner received a nice belt for 1st place. Nationally ranked youth boxers warmed up the crowd for the local IKF heroes whose action stole the show in support of this worthy charity.

Seasoned amateur MMA fighter Keegan Boyd (WATCH THIS GUY FOLKS) made his IKF Kickboxing debut and ended the bout quickly with a KO via a right hand. Jose Perez lost the first round to a former starter for the Valdosta State University football team then came back to win the second round via timing his straight rights.

The show got underway and Produced some quality fights and some great stoppages also. Alex Fitzpatrick was the fighter of the night and at the tender age of 14 years, he gave a master class in International Rules (Low Kick) today. Some nasty low kicks & some fantastic head kicks coupled with good boxing skills and great composure - this kid has a bright future.

Colm Dunphy was also on fire and after a shaky start, he really teed off on his opponent and landed some great punches and solid low kicks to take a TKO victory. Dara Mannion was back to winning ways also and stopped his opponent hard in the first round. Peter Sheppard had a war with Joe Crosse from Ennistymon and took a good points win. Sean Ryan was tested in his bout with Carlows Joe Walton but still came away with the nod. Rachel Murray had a tough first round but weathered the storm and fired back in round two & three but lost narrowly on points.

Sean King had a great scrap with Jamie Walsh (who in fairness took the fight on short notice) and won a unanimous decision.

Oisin Sweeney and Lawerence Ward were both badly let down as Oisins fighter never showed and Lawerences guy was way over weight but they both ended up in exciting exhibition fights and got to show their skills. Corey O Malley was on fire also and after some hard exchanges in the first round, he settled well in the second and stopped his opponent with a knee strike. Tom Scarrys bid to become a two weight champion was twarted by Michael Morrow who won by the tightest of margins in a decision that really could have gone either way. Damien Creavin had a great battle with much improved Carlow fighter Eoin Maher and both men landed some impressive shots but this night belonged to Eoin.

Whitney Sheppard had a war with Waterfords Megan Maher in a NO Pads Unified rules fight which went down to the wire with Whitney taking the decision. James Kelly and Adam Abduraham had a great main event and Adam proved he had a good chin as James landed some shots that would have knocked a horse out. The fight went the distance with James taking a unanimous victory. Julian Cregniot was not interested in any overtime this evening and he caught his opponent Shane Burns with a fantastic head kick at 23 seconds of the very first round to take the win by TKO.
