IKF South East Promoter Mick Bland from the well regarded Top-Pro Gym in Kilkenny City, put together an exciting International fight card in the Ormonde Hotel. The event featured an Ireland VS Scotland team event and several undercard fights. The show, which was aptly named "Clash Of The Celts" was a big success. The Top-Pro team enjoyed a full house of spectators who showed their appreciation for away fighters as well as the home team. Mick has had a busy few weeks as he only recently promoted the IKF Junior National Championships. To then take on promoting an International event such as this, shows his passion for the sport of Kickboxing. The "Clash Of The Celts" pretty much started on time, all fights ran smoothly and it was all wrapped up by around 8:PM on Sunday evening so once again, hats off to the organisers.

Funnell Wins Area Title With Yet Another Knockout

Hard hitting Terry Funnell remained unbeaten and scored another stoppage win on the second promotion by new IKF Promoter Steve Cook. The win took Funnell to 5-0 and with it came the IKF Amateur FCR Light Heavyweight Southern Area title. The event itself was held at the Waterside Theatre and was promoted with great professionalism by Cook, himself an IKF British Pro Champion.

Out Of UFC 154 Fight Against Besam Youse

On a card featuring a rather famous knee in the main event, it is a knee that has knocked out one of the undercard's competitors.

Stephen Thompson (6-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has suffered a knee injury and has been forced out of his UFC 154 fight against Besam Yousef (6-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) next month in Montreal, sources close to the fight on Friday confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). MMA Fighting first reported the news.

The UFC has not yet announced Thompson's injury, and it is not known if a replacement will be sought to face Yousef on three weeks' notice.

UFC 154 takes place Nov. 17 at Bell Centre in Montreal with a main event between UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) and interim titleholder Carlos Condit (28-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC) to unify the belts. St-Pierre is returning from a lengthy layoff following knee surgery to fight for the first time since a UFC 129 win over Jake Shields in April 2011.

Thompson came on strong in his UFC debut in February at UFC 143 when he knocked out Dan Stittgen with a head kick. The fight opened the card in Las Vegas, and only a few thousand people were inside Mandalay Bay Events Center to see it. But "Wonderboy" earned a $65,000 "Knockout of the Night" bonus in his first fight with the company.

But things didn't go as well in the follow-up for the elite-level kickboxer, whose record in that sport is a reported 63-0 (ADD: This record is 100% VERIFIED by IKFKickboxing.com). At UFC 145 in Atlanta, Thompson faced veteran Matt Brown. Despite rocking Brown twice, (According to Brown, both knocked him out temporarily.) both Brown and Thompson fought a 3 round war. When all was said and done, Brown took the win by decision. After the bout, Brown was given a 45 day medical suspension and Thompson was given a 15 day medical suspension. The unanimous decision loss was the first of Thompson's entire fighting career.

Yousef made his UFC debut in April in his native Sweden at "UFC on FUEL TV: Gustafsson vs. Silva." But despite the support of the home crowd in Stockholm, Yousef was submitted by Norway's Simeon Thoresen with a second-round rear-naked choke. Before signing with the UFC, Yousef was 6-0 with five stoppages.

Now the welterweight will await word on whether he will get a new opponent, or if he'll have to wait to find a spot on another card.

Emanuel Steward Passes Away

Emanuel Steward, revered as one of the best trainers in boxing history and whose Kronk Gym symbolized Detroit's gritty, blue-collar boxing scene and produced numerous world champions, died Thursday after a short illness (ADDED: Steward had been in a Chicago-area hospital for several weeks after undergoing surgery for what was termed diverticulitis, died October 25 at 2:46 p.m. Detroit time - from his sister, Steward-Jones said. ). He was 68.

Steward, who also managed many of the fighters he trained, worked with more than two dozen champions during his decades-long career. A younger generation of boxing fans knew him as an expert analyst on HBO's boxing telecasts.

Victoria Kirton, Steward's executive assistant, told The Associated Press that Steward died in a Chicago hospital Thursday afternoon.

Often called the Godfather of Detroit boxing, Steward was a beloved figure because of his outgoing personality, seemingly endless energy to talk about boxing with anyone who would approach him and his dedication to his fighters. As a cornerman, he commanded respect because of his strategic genius and for having the knack of saying the right thing at the right time during the heat of battle.

Fighters also loved him for his generosity and for the father-figure role he often played in their lives. Training fighters was not just a job for Steward. He often took fighters in to live with him in his Detroit home, training them by day and parenting them by night.

Steward was most closely identified with his work with three superstar fighters: multi-divisional world champion Thomas Hearns, who was with Steward from the beginning; former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis; and reigning heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

"He brought the very, very best out of me," Hearns once said of his trainer.

Steward kept his usual busy schedule through the summer, training middleweight contender Andy Lee -- who lived with Steward -- for his loss to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 16, and Klitschko for his title-retaining sixth-round knockout win against Tony Thompson in their July 7 rematch. But he had been hospitalized since September, causing him to miss two HBO broadcasts, and underwent surgery. His sister, Diane Steward Jones, said the surgery was for the stomach disorder diverticulitis, although many others who knew Steward said it was for advanced cancer.

"There are no adequate words to describe the enormous degree of sadness and loss we feel at HBO Sports with the tragic passing of Manny Steward," HBO Sports president Ken Hershman said. "For more than a decade, Manny was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science but also about friendship and loyalty. His energy, enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence. Ten bells do not seem enough to mourn his passing. His contributions to the sport and to HBO will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Born in West Virginia on July 7, 1944, Steward became interested in boxing at age 8 after he was given a pair of boxing gloves. When he was 12, he moved with his mother to Detroit and began training at Brewster's Gym, the famed gym that produced the great Joe Louis.

As an amateur fighter, Steward compiled a 94-3 record and won a 1963 National Golden Gloves title as a bantamweight. But his calling was as a trainer, not as a fighter.

Although Steward was schooled as an electrician, he began coaching amateur fighters as a part-time coach in 1971 at the Kronk Gym, which he helped transform from the basement of a community center into a breeding ground for professional champions, who would walk to the ring wearing the unmistakable red and gold Kronk colors. In 1977, he led one of those amateurs into the pro ranks. It was Hearns, who became a star and with whom Steward found fame and glory.

"With the loss of Emanuel Steward, we have lost a true Detroit icon," Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said. "Emanuel Steward embodied our city's toughness, our competitive spirit, and our determination to always answer the bell. We are grateful for Emanuel Steward's many contributions to our city and his impact on generations of young people."

There were other important fighters, too, under Steward's tutelage, including Hilmer Kenty, who became Steward's first professional champion in March 1980 when he won a lightweight world title by stopping Ernesto Espana in the ninth round at Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit.

Five months later, Hearns destroyed Pipino Cuevas in two rounds to win a welterweight title. For the next 30-plus years, Steward had a constant stable of champions, some of whom he was with from the early days of their careers and some more established fighters who sought him out because of his reputation. Other champions he trained at one time or another included Mike McCallum, Jimmy Paul, Michael Moorer, Dennis Andries, Milton McCrory, Duane Thomas, Gerald McClellan, Evander Holyfield, Oliver McCall, John David Jackson, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Oscar De La Hoya, Naseem Hamed, Jermain Taylor, Chad Dawson, Miguel Cotto, and Cornelius "K9" Bundrage.

"Emanuel thank you for giving it all for our sport and for giving me your great advice. We enjoyed those days! You will always be in my mind," Cotto tweeted.

Steward trained McCall when he knocked out Lewis to win a heavyweight title in 1994 in a huge upset and then took over Lewis' corner in 1995. He was in Lewis' corner when he stopped McCall in their 1997 rematch to regain the title. Steward and Lewis went 16-1-1 together before Lewis retired as champion in 2004, but they remained close.

"I'm completely devastated by the passing of my long time friend, mentor and trainer Emanuel 'Manny' Steward," Lewis said in a statement. "Manny has helped me get through some of the biggest fights in my career and I only regret that I couldn't return the favor and see him through his biggest fight.

"We've maintained a close relationship and the last time we spoke he seemed his usual upbeat self so it was very disturbing to hear about his illness and rapid decline. It is with a heavy heart that realization of what I hoped were just rumors are now in fact true. Manny always told me I was the best, but the truth is, he was the best and I'm grateful, privileged and honored to be counted among his many historic successes. ... We've truly lost one of (boxing's) crown jewels. Manny was giving, selfless, compassionate and stern. He always gave back to the community and never forgot where he came from. He was an institution unto himself and I'm proud to have had him in my corner for so many years.

"I'm extremely grateful for the time that I was given with him and he will be severely missed by all who knew and loved him. I'll miss his smile, his frank no-holds-barred truthfulness and our discussions on boxing and life. My prayers and condolences go out to his family at this very difficult time."

Klitschko, who is training in Austria for a Nov. 10 title defense against Mariusz Wach, knew the gravity of Steward's illness and was forced this week to announce a replacement for Steward for the fight, tapping Steward disciple and pro heavyweight Johnathon Banks, a Kronk Gym product.

"(My brother) Vitali and I, along with the entire Team Klitschko, send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Emanuel's family and friends," Wladimir Klitschko said in a statement. "It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend. Well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade."

Steward began working with Klitschko in 2004, and their first fight resulted in a knockout loss to Lamon Brewster. But under Steward's steady hand, Klitschko rebuilt himself into a heavyweight force and one of the most dominant heavyweight champions in history.

Steward got a lot of the credit for helping Klitschko mentally as much as he did for training him physically. Klitschko and Steward shared a close bond that went deeper than simply trainer and fighter.

"I will miss our time together," Klitschko said. "The long talks about boxing, the world, and life itself. Most of all I will miss our friendship. Rest in peace Emanuel. You will be greatly missed.

"My team and I will carry on with the goals we had set while Emanuel was with us because that is exactly what Emanuel would have wanted. I know he will be with us in spirit along the way and we will accomplish these goals in his honor. Until we meet again my friend."

Steward trained then-welterweight champion De La Hoya in 1997.

"It brings me great grief and sadness to hear of the passing of one of the best and most respected trainers of this era, Emanuel Steward," De La Hoya said. "I learned a lot from him during our professional relationship and I will be forever grateful for his help during that time. We were also friends and I know I am going to miss him as so many others will too. He was an important part of our boxing community."

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had been a friend of Steward's since the 1980s and promoted many of the fights involving the fighters he trained.

"We are all grieving the passing of our friend Emanuel Steward," Arum said. "His founding and leadership of the Kronk Gym in Detroit was outstanding. His efforts produced many world class fighters and champions including Tommy Hearns, Milt McCrory, Michael Moorer and many more. Emanuel Steward always stood for the best that boxing could offer. He will be missed by all of us."

Although Steward was part of many big wins, he had his share of hurtful defeats. None stung him more than when Hearns was knocked out in the 14th round by Sugar Ray Leonard in the memorable 1981 welterweight championship fight. Steward said it was the most painful experience of his life, boxing or otherwise. He was also hurt by the third-round knockout loss Hearns suffered against Marvelous Marvin Hagler challenging for the middleweight title in their all-time great 1985 showdown.

Steward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996.

"Without a doubt, Emanuel Steward was one of the most accomplished and respected trainers in the history of boxing," said Ed Brophy, executive director of the Canastota, N.Y., shrine. "He was a great ambassador for the sport, always promoting boxing wherever he traveled. The Hall of Fame joins the worldwide boxing world in mourning the passing of a legend."

Brophy said the flags at the Hall of Fame would fly at half-staff in his memory. Steward was named trainer of the year by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 1993 and 1997. The BWAA voted him manager of the year in 1980 and 1989.

USA Boxing Back In Business

The pleas of USA Boxing President Dr. Charles Butler, who has the respect of most world-wide in amateur boxing, have helped Dr. C.K. Wu (AIBA President) and Mr. Ho Kim (AIBA Executive Director) re-think the catastrophic earlier decision made by the AIBA Disciplinary Committee and have taken USA Boxing off of the '90 days suspended' list.

This decision keeps many shows around the country scheduled for this weekend on course, a new breath of life saving the USA Boxing organization from disaster had the cancellation of sanctioned events been enforced.

If there were any doubting the respect world-wide Dr. Butler has earned, this decision reversal by a stern AIBA Disciplinary Committee should squash any of those lingering concerns

While the 34 LBC Presidents who voted FOR Hal Adonis to remain a member of the USA Boxing Board of Directors now have time to re-think their previous decision, do not underestimate the long arm of 'good old boy' networking that remains prevalent in amateur boxing to go away quietly in the night.

The 17 LBC Presidents who voted for Hal Adonis to be booted from the USA Boxing Board of Directors, this is no time to 'thump your chests' if you have been reluctant to come forward before the decision reversal was made.

Insideboxing.com offered anY/all LBC Presidents nationwide to come forward and state their reasoning for whatever voting avenue they chose, a few quality folks willing to readily stste their case with no reservations.

For AIBA, today showed their own benevolence in understanding the impact their earlier decison would have on amateur boxing here in these United States.

For Dr. Charles Butler and Anthony Bartkowski, today should open the door to a new beginning, one where the path to having an organization free of self-centered, closet discriminating, only concerned with themselves members who have wormed their way into positions of prominence, can operate.

As is fairly obvious to most anyone, Dr. Butler called in every favor imaginable to get the 90 day suspension overturned, him proving in a big way he fully supports and is committed to USA amateur boxing, their coaches, boxers and members.

There remain the few loyal supporters of Hal Adonis who should resign and follow their disgraced leader into retirement, but Reggie Winston, Joe Zanders, Ron Simms, Kymberli Stowe and Gary Pliner won't 'do the right thing' and resign, they'll hang around and pretend they are on board with the new leadership, waiting for any opportunity to slide in the back door of USA Boxing and gain control.

That happens and the USOC, AIBA and everyone else will have every right to intervene.

As the LBC Presidents nationwide have dodged (for the moment) a bullet that had life threatening potential, the same capabilities hang in the balance with the above named individuals remaining a cancer that needs to be removed.

For now LIFE IS GOOD in USA Boxing, the light at the end of the tunnel having gotten a helluva lot brighter than it was a mere 24 hours ago.

Needless to say, IAB - International Amateur Boxing, will soon be sanctioning Amateur Boxing in the USA even more now, and the future of USA Boxing's approval is still a lingering question... As the IAB was told, "You can only take so much negative drama, and the time has come to speak up..."

Does The USA Boxing Suspension
Open The Door For The
IAB - International Amateur Boxing?


As one may expect, the announcement yesterday of the nationwide USA Boxing suspension has made a lot of waves. Since yesterday afternoon, the IAB - International Amateur Boxing phones have been ringing off the hook with Amateur Boxing people asking "What can the IAB do for us?"

The answer to this question will be different in every state because every state has their own rules and regulations when it comes to regulating Amateur Boxing. Our first advice to those who have been calling or plan to call is to contact your State Athletic or Boxing Commission and ask them if the IAB can sanction/regulate your amateur boxing event. Once you have your answer from them, you can decide your next step.

Most states have USA Boxing written into their laws as the only regulatory body allowed to sanction/regulate amateur boxing. This was done many years ago to separate Amateur Boxing from state control. How it was possible comes down to money and power and since amateur boxing is a part of the Olympic Games, you can see where both came from to get USA Boxing the power to have this done.

Within a matter of days after International Fight Sports launched the IAB, USA Boxing and it's followers were going on the defensive to try and shut it down. At the time and even more so today, USA Boxing was in the middle of some major financial and ethical turmoil and when you have your back against the wall, sometimes the best thing to do is to try and change the subject.

However the original goal of the IAB was no different than the original goal of the IKF (International Kickboxing Federation) or the ISCF (International Sport Combat Federation - MMA) which was to organize Kickboxing as well as later, MMA with rules, regulations, rankings and legit title fight opportunities, something USA Boxing just never did. The biggest push for the IAB was from the many IKF and ISCF Promoters worldwide that wanted to work with a boxing sanctioning body that wasn't caught up in what many were calling the "Bowl of Alphabet soup and corruption." IAB had no ties with big time Boxing promoters but what the IAB did have was a SOLID track record of fair sanctioning, safe regulating and a desire to bring attention to the Amateur Fighters who build the foundation of any sport...

The IAB was for IKF and ISCF Promoters who wanted to add credible amateur boxing and amateur boxing titles to their events. They had a lot of amateur boxers who had no desire to join USA Boxing because they could care less about going to the Olympics, they just wanted to box as an amateur and maybe get the opportunity to win an amateur boxing title like the IKF and ISCF offers for fighters.

In 2011 the ABC (Association of Boxing Commissions) held their annual meeting in Washington DC. One of the highly discussed topics was the lack of ethics and foul play by USA Boxing and many associated with them from fighters (Who wanted to be paid for fighting, but still wanted to keep their amateur status) to trainers and event promoters. What was thought to be a short discussion turned into a major one as state after state spoke up negatively about USA Boxing asking for an alternative.

The last 24 hours have changed a lot of thinking here at the IAB offices. The IAB still has no desire to take USA Boxing's position... However, there is an addition to this statement now... "Unless we have the support of the State Boxing Commissions of the states where we get a request from, who want us to step in as interim regulators of Amateur Boxing until USA Boxing gets it's house back in order." said IAB commissioner Steve Fossum.

However according to sources who have spoke to the IAB, what seems like a few months suspension could actually turn into a year or more. Apparently there is a lot to clean up and the reason for this suspension was just the straw that happened to break the camel's back per say. It seems USA Boxing had been teetering on the edge for the past several years and it took an action by AIBA to finally get the USOC to move forward with their support of the suspension...

As many already know, the IAB would be more than capable as interim regulators for amateur boxing to fill the void and keep Amateur Boxers busy until the USA Boxing suspension is over, whenever that may be. To add, as one commissioner put it, it would give those in charge a chance to see how the IAB operates and if they could, if presented the offer, take over amateur boxing in the USA.

Here are the details of what finally brought USA Boxing to a halt here in the USA.
As previously noted, this was not the only issue as there were many others leading up to this.

This suspension (To the Public that is) focus around comments made by Hal Adonis (Right) which were the stated reason why USA Boxing got suspended by AIBA effectively October 19, 2012 for 3 months.

The AIBA handed down a three month suspension to USA Boxing today, effectively ending all sanctioned amateur competition until mid-January.



The situation revolves around statements made by former president of USA Boxing and current board member Hal Adonis. Adonis previously made offensive comments to the New Yorker magazine that

"homosexuality runs rampant in female boxing and also included statements that boxers are more likely to succeed in the sport if they were abused as children."

AIBA contacted USA Boxing and told them to resolve the issue and remove Adonis from the board for defaming the AIBA, the sport of boxing, doing harm to minority groups in the sport..etc. While USA Boxing did remove Hal from his role as president, he was not removed from the board entirely, as explained in a communication sent out by the group: After Mr. Adonis made the alleged statements, the Board of USA Boxing voted to remove Mr. Adonis as President and Chairman of the Board. Colorado law requires that removal from the Board of USA Boxing requires a majority vote of the voting electors who placed Mr. Adonis on the board. Accordingly, the Board of Directors requested a vote of the 72 electors to remove Mr. Adonis from the board. Fifty-one (51) of the 72 voting members responded. The majority of the 51 voting members cast their ballots to retain Mr. Adonis as a board member. For this reason, USA Boxing is charged as equally guilty in these violations of the Olympic principles, AIBA Articles, the Rules of USA Boxing and code of ethics of USA Boxing.

On September 27, 2012 USA Boxing received a letter from the USOC threatening decertification of USA Boxing if immediate agreement to a change of governance were not met. This letter included a timeline within which USA Boxing must meet the required change of governance or face dissolution. The letter from the USOC was several pages long and contained a laundry list of the past failings and mistakes of USA Boxing. In addition to the abbreviated list of our failings, this letter contained the names of two members of our organization, Mr. Hal Adonis and Mr. Gary Pliner who were each specifically cited as partial cause for this decertification notice.

The demands of the USOC to avoid immediate decertification included immediate acceptance of a mutually agreed-upon Advisory Committee which would oversee the actions of USA Boxing, acceptance of a "Transitional Board" as of December 31, 2012, and the "new governance" which would be acceptable to the USOC and AIBA, and which would be put forward for mutual agreement by June 1, 2013. The service of the Transitional Board will terminate and the new governance takeover January 1, 2014.

That was followed with tonight's communication explaining that the program had been suspended:
USA Boxing just received notification from AIBA, the international federation for boxing, that all amateur boxing activities in the United States are immediately suspended. The suspension cancels all sanctioned competitions; coach and official clinics; boxing club activities; membership registrations; and insurance coverage.

USA Boxing and our insurance companies will not take any insurance claims until the AIBA suspension is remedied and/or served until January 19, 2013. The AIBA Disciplinary Commission levied this suspension against the organization for inappropriate and improper statements made by Mr. Hal Adonis earlier this year.

The AIBA Disciplinary Commission Decision of October 19, 2012 states:

"By failing to remove Mr. Adonis from the USA Boxing Board of Directors when it had the chance to do so, USA Boxing, in essence, endorsed Mr. Adonis' statements and sent out a message that such behavior was acceptable. The action (or lack thereof) and the very serious and harmful nature of Mr. Adonis statements, has jeopardized boxing and the Panel finds it appropriate to impose a suspension upon USA Boxing. This suspension must reflect the severity of the offence."

The AIBA suspension terms are:

  1. USA Boxing shall be fully suspended for a period of 3 months from October 19, 2012.

  2. Mr. Adonis shall pay a fine of CHF 2,000 and be suspended from all boxing activities at national and international levels, for 2 years starting from October 19, 2012.

  3. The costs of the proceedings, fixed at CHF 1,500, shall be borne equally between USA Boxing and Mr. Adonis.

  4. The decision will be communicated to USA Boxing, Mr. Adonis (via Hollie L Wieland of Karp Neu Hanlon Attorneys) and to the Headquarters of AIBA.

This is the initial notification. It is unclear if further conditions or demands will follow. We are waiting on further details from AIBA. Your President; Board of Directors; and Executive Director are working diligently to determine any further demands of this suspension and to see if USA Boxing can offer any remedies to shorten it. In the event that we are successful in shortening or lessening our penalties, USA Boxing will notify you immediately to let you know your sanctioned event can take place. Please assist in communicating this information to your constituents as soon as possible. We will continue to update you on the status of this suspension as necessary. In the meantime, USA Boxing and the Board of Directors are taking every measure available to ensure that amateur boxing is resumed as soon as possible.

Emphasis mine. Of course, this wasn't the only thing Adonis did recently that was inexcusable. Including this horrible display (via Examiner.com): ...this Hal Adonis 'situation' began last year when Inside Boxing.com became aware of the death of Marine Corporal Libardo Anthony Jimenez, Jr. who died on March 23, 2010, following an unusually rigorous training session under the guidance of Ron Simms, then Head Boxing Coach of the All-Marines Boxing Team who was later terminated by the U.S. Marine Corps following their own internal investigation deeming him 'unfit to coach'.

The arrogance and pompous attitudes of Hal Adonis, Joe Zanders, and Rons Simms who all refused to apologize to Mrs. Penny Palmer (mother of Jimenez, Jr.) and the deceased Marines' family was and remains an unforgivable offense.

In another blatant show of their viewed superiority, Adonis and then 2012 USA Olympic Boxing Head Coach Zanders unbelievably appointed Ron Simms an assistant coach on that staff to the dismay of U.S. Marines around the world.

The USOC stepped in and not only dismissed Ron Simms from the team, but Zanders as well, with Adonis left fuming and more defiant than ever.

Adonis also failed to name an Olympic coaching staff more than 100 days before this past summer's games. Another violation of his position.

What is most unfortunate here is who is hurt. It's about the kids and young adults who rely on the USA Boxing amateur program. The AIBA showed themselves to be well outside of anything close to "in control" of the sport during these Olympic games with a seemingly endless line of controversy. USA Boxing is a program that is a mess to begin with and the fact that board members would vote to retain Adonis in this situation is mindblowing.

And because of everyone higher up the food chain, it'll be three months where kids who don't make any decisions are the ones who suffer.

California State Athletic Commission!

This coming November 7th, the California State Athletic Commission will welcome a new Executive Director...
Andy Foster of Georgia.

So many here in California want to know a little about Mr. Foster... Well, let us fill you in.

Foster's roots in the fight sports are very well known to those of us here at the International Kickboxing Federation and our sister organization for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) the International Sport Combat Federation. Since 1997 Foster has been a fighter, trainer, promoter as well as an official with both organizations. Knowing this, when promoters, trainers, fighters and other officials need to speak to the Executive Director in California, they won't encounter some pencil - pushing bureaucrat who knows very little about fight sports. Simply put, Foster literally has been in their shoes!

He is an experienced multi-disciplined fighter and martial artist who has trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, Aikido, Judo, Hapkido, Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, Sambo, Kickboxing, and Boxing. By the time he retired as a professional MMA fighter he had a fight record of 17 wins with 2 loses. (8-0 Amateur and 9-2 Professional / Pro- 2 KOs, 7 Submissions, 1 TKO, 1 Decision). However MMA wasn't his only fight sport. He also has a 23-3 Amateur Boxing Record, a 77-4-2 Sport Grappling Record as well as some amateur kickboxing fights.

However, being a successful fighter wasn't all he's done. He has promoted five professional MMA cards, four professional boxing matches, matchmaker of nine professional MMA cards, trained over 30 successful MMA fighters, refereed over 500 MMA bouts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Instructor (2003–2007), served as Head Referee for the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission (2007–2008), instructed several referee and judge training course on behalf of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, and judged over 100 MMA bouts... So again... Foster has literally been in ALL our shoes!

He was also a 3 time Champion. As an Amateur he won the ISCF Amateur East Coast Light Heavyweight Title on October 25th, 2003 in Dalton, Georgia, USA when he defeated Will Blankenship of Athens, Georgia, USA by Armbar submission at 2:18 of round 1. The following year he went on to win the ISCF Amateur East Coast Middleweight title on April 23rd, 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA when he defeated Tim Stout by Rear Naked Choke in round 1. He also won the BodogFight Series III Costa Rica Combat winner in 2007.

Foster retired his ISCF Amateur Titles when he turned Pro on August 2nd, 2004. While fighting he lived in Dalton, Georgia and was trained by Ben Kiker, who later became one of the Commissioner of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission. (See IKF January 2010 News - Changes To The Georgia Athletic & Entertainment Commission!) Foster also fought as a Kickboxer on several IKF Sanctioned events in Georgia. He eventually turned Pro on August 2nd, 2004 and then retired from fighting in 2007.

With all his success as a professional mixed martial arts fighter, in 2008, Foster gave it all up to help better the fight sports from a regulatory position.
In 2008 Foster was appointed by then Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel as the Executive Director of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission. While there, he was instrumental in helping with both Amateur and Professional fight sport rules and regulations that made Georgia one of the countries leaders in fight sport regulations.

Later that year he was named 2008 Georgia Boxing Official of the Year by the Georgia Championship Boxing Committee at the Committee's annual Awards Banquet. The Committee is comprised of managers, trainers, promoters, commissioners and officials throughout the state. "Andrew's efforts have helped boxing, wrestling and mixed martial arts create a positive impact on the Georgia economy, increase the safety for the participants of these sports, and make Georgia a more viable option to attract bigger name attractions," said then Secretary Handel.

In September of 2009 the ISCF teamed up with ISCF promoter Monica Sanford, the owner of Devil Dog (DD) Productions who is the wife of a U.S. Marine and accomplished something no one has ever done in the history of fight sports. The location was a military base in Mosul, Kuwait, Iraq and the event was called "Fight Night For Heroes". ISCF President Steve Fossum was scheduled to attend as the chief ISCF Event Representative, however instead, he offered the opportunity to Foster who gladly accepted. (Right)

Foster and ISCF Promoter Brett Moses (Fight Party Productions) and ISCF Official JJ Coronel (Who also served as a judge on the event) coordinated ISCF Referees Tony Mullinax & Kim Winslow along with ISCF Judges Chris McGloughlin & Cardo Urso to regulate the 17 bout event involving mainly active duty military and was held on Saturday, September 5th, 2009.

Along with representing the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission as a member of the Association of Boxing Commissions ( www.abcboxing.com) he is a member of the Unified Rules Committee of Matchmaking of Mixed Martial Arts (2008–Present); Association of Boxing Commissions Member of the Unified Rules Committee to review Unified Rules (2008–Present) and Association of Boxing Commissions Chairman of the Amateur Unified Rules Committee.

"I'm very excited to be coming to California," stated Foster in the release. "It has a rich boxing and MMA presence with the largest number of shows in the nation, and I look forward to ensuring a regulatory environment that is consistent and fair based upon contestant safety, public protection, and economic growth."

Foster will be a VERY WELCOME Executive Director for California. Former ED George Dodd had great intentions and did some very good things. However, his hands were tied in a lot of ways and he was often held back from the sitting board. Surly there are many different opinions as to what Dodd did or did not accomplish. For the IKF, he was exceptional and willing to try new things that included the "First Ever" State Commission regulated Amateur Muay Thai Kickboxing Tournament, the 2011 IKF West Coast Classic Amateur Muay Thai / Kickboxing Championships that were held on November 25th, 26th & 27th, 2011 in Sacramento, California.

However it's not hard to find negative opinions about the CSAC on the internet. For the last several years it's been a smorgasbord of "Drama" topics fight sport writers have had to write about. Even Foster's appointment gave writers the opportunity to write about the CSAC's past. (Click Here.)

Regardless, there is a strong sense of optimism here at the IKF and ISCF as well as with many others in California that Foster will step in and 'take the bull by the horns' per say and get the right things done. One thing the board can't do is claim inexperience of him. From the training gyms, to the ring, the cage all the way to the Executive Directors desk, Foster is without a doubt the MOST EXPERIENCED Executive Director California has EVER had! Hopefully the Commission Board will listen to Foster and his fresh ideas as to how he turned things around in Georgia and made it a welcome state for Fight Sports at both the Amateur and Professional levels.

CSAC chairman John Frierson said today in a press release. "We are hoping he (Foster) can do in California what he did in Georgia in terms of increasing both revenue and the number of shows," To do so, Frierson and his board needs to allow Foster some open ground to implement new ideas, even if current laws and policies need to be changed or adapted, such as the requirement of ONLY a non-profit regulatory body can oversee amateur fight sports, or have the STATE Commission take over Amateur MMA like Foster did in Georgia. However Foster allowed, approved Muay Thai and Kickboxing sanctioning bodies to oversee Amateur Muay Thai and Kickboxing in Georgia, which has helped build the amateur fight sports, which build the pro fight sports, etc, you get the idea... Bottom line is more state revenue is what California needs to keep the Athletic Commission going... California needs Foster to do exactly that here! The question is, "Will Frierson and his board allow Foster to do so?"

Results From Performance Martial Arts's
"IKF Junior Light Contact Show"
October 7th, 2012 - Meath, Ireland




The IKF sanctioned another junior light contact show hosted by Performance Martial Arts head coach and IKF promoter Mick Burke. This show was held in the Ashbourne Community Centre in Ashbourne, Co Meath. This was a particularly special show as Mick introduced a pilot scheme for junior light contact which was "low kick" rules. Low kick had never been done in Ireland before so this was on a trial basis.

The show was well attended with over 70 kids signed up to compete, 20 of them were for the low kick section. Unlike IKF Point Kickboxing, the IKF Light Contact Kickboxing can take place in a boxing ring. This event featured bouts in a 16 foot competition boxing ring along with two matted areas. The event started on time with all the fights matched off by height, weight and experience. When all came to an end, all participants walked away with very nice medals. There were clubs from all over Ireland as far up as Derry and down as far as Cork in attendance. There were kids competing from ages 6 to 7 years old and the new low kick section was from ages 11 to 17 years.

The above the waist "Full Contact" rule bouts took place first followed by the low kick section afterwards. There were a total of 10 low kick fights that attracted clubs from other arts too such as Muay Thai and MMA. All the fights were well matched and the show was a big success. The new Junior low kick section was too and something that will surely be coming in on more shows in the future for the IKF.

Mick and his team would like to thank all the clubs, coaches and fighters who travelled to attend this show. It's days like this that makes the junior side of things in the IKF so popular and it was a great day out for all the kids of Ireland.

"Undisputed III"
In Ipswich, Suffolk, England WAS CANCELLED...




As many from England here know, the scheduled Undisputed III Kickboxing event scheduled for Saturday, October 6th, 2012 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England was cancelled on the day of the event when the IKF officials were informed that full medical cover was NOT in place for the event. The ambulance/medical support team never arrived, despite the promoter confirming he had booked them The IKF withdrew sanctioning and cancelled the event as safety is of course paramount. After the event, the promoter posted the following message on the internet:

As many of you have probably heard the Undisputed event was cancelled due to the Red Cross letting us down on the night. We tried to get a replacement ambulance service, but it was not meant to be. Even though we had doctors and medical staff on site fighters safety comes 1st and is paramount. We could of unsanctioned the show and kept it running, but again that is not the right way to do things. All tickets have been refunded, those that have kept their tickets will get an upgraded VIP ticket on the next event end of Jan. Fighters and staff looked after. Many thanks to sponsors, Staff and Affiliates, Liquid, Tates and all involved for the support and understanding. We have fighters that are ready to fight in K-1, Kickboxing and MMA so if there are any shows needing fighters in the next few weeks please contact me.

However, an update is due here to many inquiring about the event. There were some people who thought the cancellation was not justified due to press releases such as the one above, and if true, they would have good reason to be. Clearly Mr. Hunt was telling everyone that the IPswich Red Cross was actually the ones who let him down. However, after looking into things, it was discovered that this was not the case. Please find below an exchange of e-mails between the Red Cross and a concerned individual and what you will see for yourself should clear up any questions as to the justification of the cancellation of this event.

Hi I would like to complain about the red cross not turning up to the kickboxing event in Liquid nightclub in Ipswich on the 6th October. A number of people travelled a long way, including me and my friends, and it cost a lot of money only for the event to be cancelled at the last minute due to the red cross not turning up. This is very unprofessional. The promoters said that you had been contracted to provide the medical support for the event but had not turned up without giving any notice. I would like to know what the reason was. Thank you.

I am very sorry to hear that you travelled to an event that was cancelled at the last minute by the organisers. I am also very disappointed to learn that the promoters have told you that the British Red Cross were contracted to attend. The British Red Cross had not been contracted to attend and only knew about the event when the club called the emergency line shortly before the event was due to commence. The organisers have not contacted the Red Cross since to discuss the matter further but after the call last Saturday we reviewed our records and can confirm the promoters had not previously been in touch with us about this event. As you will be aware the Red Cross is a voluntary not for profit organisation which undertakes first aid at events to ensure its first aid volunteers have the opportunity to develop their skills and experience. The organisation takes its responsibilities very seriously and works hard to maintain its professional standing and so it is very disheartening to learn that information which is incorrect and damaging has been shared inappropriately. I hope this answers your question but should you require any further information please don't hesitate to contact me.

Adding to this was the comments by an individual named Steven Wellson posted on October 7th on the internet the following;
What a night! One of the sponsors for Marlon Conrad Hunt tonight and the Red Cross of all people let him down by not turning up. Of course the officials said no show due to the physical risk to fighters and no one was really in a position to make the annoucement to a huge crowd that had waited for nearly 3 hours because the official was too chicken to! I volunteered, stood in the middle of the ring and made the announcement that it was all cancelled, but we were all there to support the local fighters and associations. The fighters that had trained for months were of course annoyed as was poor old Marlon, but what can you do when the medics dont turn up?? Thanks to Nick who tried to convince the NHS to cover it! Anyway we will all try again in January and thank you to the crowd that gave us a round of applause after I explained what had happened - it really could have been quite different given all the alchohol and testostarone! Anyone one good deed deserves another - got home to realise I had lost my keys to both my Ipswich and Belfast homes! Phoned Hawk express who had taken us into town and they said the cabie had reported some found keys - he could of robbed us blind, but instead got out of bed to bring them back to us! :) He of course got a decent tip but nice to know some genuine people are out there!!

Mr. Wellson, before you go off and start calling "ANY" Fight Sport Official from "ANY" regulatory organization "Chicken" followed by a self serving attempt to make yourself look like the "Brave Hero Knight on a White Horse", let us inform you that in such a case, it would be the promoters responsibility to make any such announcement to the crowd. Maybe you should seek your appreciation and praise from Mr. Hunt, as the favor you did was more for him, and NOT any such Official who was simply doing there job!

The only thing remaining to be done related to this event is for Mr. Hunt to please take care of the Officials fees which are still due.

IKF Promoter Mick Bland and his team at Top Pro Kickboxing Gym in Kilkenny once again put together a top class Junior Irish Open National Light Contact Kickboxing Championships. The event was held in the impressive O' Loughlin Gaels GAA Club in Kilkenny. The tournament attracted young fighters from all over Ireland and the set up was second to none. Three full boxing rings and two matted areas available to ensure the tournament ran smoothly. No one was waiting too long and all divisions were completed in just a few hours.

When the junior championships were over, the rings were already in place for more action. Up next was the novice adults tournament for fighters with up to three fights. This event was et up to give people the chance to fight under various rules such as Full Contact, K-1, Low Kick and White Collar Boxing. Several novice fighters took advantage of this to gain invaluable experience in their chosen sport.

Mick Bland and his team wish to convey their thanks to all the fighters, coaches, judges, referees, parents, medics, Dr. Maura Grummell, O' Loughlin Gaels Club, the IKF and indeed anyone who helped make the day such a success.

Patrik Kontraszti arrived in Wales as a multiple time European Champion and looked to be a tough proposition for current IKF European Champion James Wallis in the vacant world title contest. During the early rounds Wallis seemed to have the measure of his taller opponent and closed him down with solid punch combinations. Kontrastzi tried to use his reach but took until the middle part of the contest to get it together. Rounds 5-8 were probably Kontrastzi's best, but just as you thought he might begin to pick off Wallis, the Welshman stepped up a gear to run away with the contest in the final rounds. James Wallis absolutely deserves this World title having won and defended at every level en route to the prize. We are proud to have him as IKF World Super Middleweight Champion.

Good Luck This Weekend!

Multi time IKF World Classic Champion Tecia Torres will be making her Pro Debut this Saturday night. Torres will face off against Kaiyana Rain of Los Angeles, California Saturday at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas on the Invicta Fighting Championships all Women's MMA event.

Torres of North Lauderdale, Florida, USA (16-4/2 in kickboxing / Muay Thai and 7-0 in amateur MMA) won't be the only fighter known to the IKF on the event. IKF Champion Joanne Calderwood of Glasgow, Scotland (18-2 in Kickboxing/Muay Thai and 3-0 in Pro MMA) will take on Ashley Cummins (MMA: 3-0) of St. Louis Missouri in a 3 round undercard bout.

Calderwood won the IKF Pro Muay Thai European Flyweight title on September 13th, 2009 in Glasgow Scotland when she defeated Maria Curriki of Madrid Spain by unanimous decision.

Out of 4 trips to "The Show" Torres won the IKF World Classic tournament 3 times. Her wins were her last 3 World Classic appearances in a row.

2009: At her first IKF World Classic appearance in 2009 in Orlando Florida, Torres defeated her first two opponents by decision before losing in the Championship bout to Tiffany Connell of Bradenton, Florida by unanimous decision, 29-28, 30-27 & 29-28.

2010: At the 2009 IKF World Classic in Orlando Florida, Torres first defeated Lacey Roberts of Denham Springs, Louisiana by unanimous decision, 30-26, 30-26, 30-26. In her second bout of the day she defeated Lakesha Springle of Augusta, Georgia, USA by majority decision, 30-26, 29-27, 28-28. The next day in her Championship bout she defeated Jacqui Bradley of Burlington, Ontario, Canada by unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 to take home the title.

2011: At the 2011 IKF World Classic in Orlando Florida, Torres defeated Carolina Muñoz of San Pedro, San Jose, Costa Rica by unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-26 & 30-27 to take home the title.

2012: At this years 2012 IKF World Classic in Orlando Florida, Torres first defeated Karina Montero of Altamonte Springs, Florida by unanimous decision, 30-26 on all 3 judges cards. In her second bout of the day she defeated Michele Burke of Jacksonville, Florida by unanimous decision, 30-27 on all 3 judges cards. The next day on Championship Sunday she defeated Nicole Ball of Arlington, Virginia by unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 & 30-28 to take home the title.
